Fire Brigade Equipment
Firefighting: A Noble and Worthy Career
Firefighting is not only about putting out fires or knowing how to use the fire brigade equipment. Being a firefighter is all about commitment and dedication, about saving lives and caring for other people, about making the community a better place to live.
This kind of career is something that will give you the kind of pride and fulfillment that you will hardly be able to find in any other career. Of course, we cannot deny the fact that this is a very dangerous job that can put your life at risk. However, the satisfaction you get in return for being able to save people is truly beyond price.
Before becoming a firefighter, one of the first things that you need to do is to undergo formal education and training. This is because you cannot fight fire if you do not know the difference between a hose tubing and fire hose coupling.
Some universities and colleges are now offering courses on fire engineering and fire science that are good stepping-stones towards the career of becoming a firefighter. Fire departments also provide extensive training and preparation for aspiring firefighters.
Aside from this, you also need to determine if you have the right courage and strength for this job. You cannot fight fire if your knees tremble at the sight of one. Moreover, you need both strength of mind and body so you will be able to carry out the job efficiently.
Strength of the body is important because carrying and using firefighting equipment require intense physical work. Just using the fire hose is already a lot of work especially because the pressurized water is very heavy. Of course, physical strength is not the only thing important for firefighters.
You also need to have competent mental skills so that you will be able to understand and memorize fire safety and firefighting procedures and protocols, and make rational decisions during fire emergencies. For example, directions on firefighting equipment such as hose reel instructions require thorough understanding so you will be able to use the fire hose efficiently when necessary.
Being a firefighter also takes a lot of courage. Facing fire and all its perils can be a terrifying experience. Even if you are equipped with sufficient knowledge on firefighting, you still will not able to step a foot inside a burning house if you do not have the right courage for this job.
As important as courage is a person’s sound psychological health. As we all know, fire tragedies can have devastating effect on a person’s psychological well-being. Fire victims usually experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorder after such tragic event.
This is not far from happening with firefighters because day in, day out, they become witnesses to disastrous fire accidents and loss of properties and lives. It is possible for firefighters to succumb to trauma and stress after a grueling day at work. Having a sound psychological health will help prevent such problems.
Furthermore, you need to have presence of mind and be able to stay calm when fighting fire, using fire utilities such as fire hydrant equipment, and fire hoses. The fulfillment you will get from this kind of noble career is priceless. It is no wonder that even though it is a very dangerous job, many people still strive to become a firefighter.
