On Fighting Fire, Staying Calm, and Thinking Rationally
It is true that one of the most important prerequisites of fighting fire is proper knowledge on different kinds of firefighting tools such as fire hoses, fire extinguishers, and fire hydrant equipment. But what most people overlook is the importance of staying calm and thinking rationally in moments where you have to face the dangers of a fire.
Fire can be so devastating that people always wish that this never happen to them, to their homes, or to their family. However, wishing will not prevent something if it is really bound to happen and because there is always that possibility for a fire accident to occur no matter how careful and cautious you are, you need to always be prepared for such occurrence.
One thing that you need is to have proper knowledge and skills on firefighting. At home, make sure that you know how to utilize a fire extinguisher. In the workplace, be familiar with the rudiments of the layflat fire hose installed in your office premises.
Of course, before you can fight a fire, you have to call up the fire brigade first and alert the people in the area about it by pressing the fire alarm, shouting “fire” or making sounds such as banging of walls. This is important because even if you manage to put out the fire, the fire service still need to ensure that no fire will reignite. Furthermore, people should be alerted about the fire so everyone can get out safely.
After that, you need to decide whether the fire can be stopped or not. If the fire is still small, incipient, and not yet spreading, you can attempt to extinguish it if you have easy access to any fire extinguisher or Fire hose. You should only try to fight the fire if you are absolutely confident that you have the ability and presence of mind to do it efficiently.
On the other hand, if one of the following circumstances is present: fire is already big and spreading or if you are not confident about your knowledge and skills on using fire safety utilities, fighting fire may not be your best option.
Remember that it is not advisable to do last minute studying of the fire extinguisher or reading the hose reel instructions when the fire is already happening. Instead, focus on getting out of the place and evacuating people as fast as you can.
If you do decide to put out the fire, do your best to stay calm while doing so. Panicking will do you no good and will only prevent you from thinking rationally. Get a hold of yourself and remember what you have learned from fire drills. For example, if using a fire extinguisher, you need to pull out the safety pin, turn on the nozzle, aim at the base of the fire, and make a sweeping motion to put out the fire completely.
Do not forget to have your back behind an exit when fighting fire so that if ever it gets out of control despite your efforts to extinguish it, you can easily escape the premises. Having high quality fire safety equipment and tools in your home or office gives you a better chance of fighting fire effectively.
