Putting Out Fires: When to Fight or Flee

Before you make your way towards the hose reel cabinet or the fire extinguisher storage, the first thing you have to determine is whether to fight the fire or flee from the burning area. This is one of the most important decisions that you have to make prior to firefighting. Making a bad decision can lead to severe damage to property or worse, loss of lives.

It is advisable to fight fire if all of these situations are present:

1. The fire is still small, incipient, and not yet spreading.

Small fires that are contained in one place and are on its initial stage are possible to be extinguished using the fire extinguisher or Fire hose installed in your home or workplace. You have to remember that fire can be very dangerous and if it gets out of hand, you might get trapped inside the burning area.

Presence of flammable substances such as gas and fuels will make it more difficult to extinguish a fire. Even if the fire is still small but you can see that it is quickly spreading, do not attempt to fight it anymore because it can double in size in just a matter of seconds.

2. You have high quality firefighting tools and equipment.

You should only fight fire if you have high quality firefighting tools and equipment such as Norsen hose reel and Chubb fire extinguishers among many others that will not fail you during a fire emergency. You also have to be sure that these pieces of equipment are on top working condition by conducting regular inspections.

3. You are knowledgeable about firefighting procedures.

For example, if you are going to use a fire hose reel, you should know the hose reel instructions by heart. Or if you are going to utilize a fire extinguisher, you need to know the step-by-step procedure on how to operate this tool.

4. You are confident about your firefighting skills.

Not only do you need to have proper knowledge on firefighting but you also have to be confident about your skills. To be able to put out a fire effectively, you need to do it with enough confidence and a presence of mind.

On the other hand, if one of the opposite situations is present, it would be smart to concentrate on getting out of the area and evacuating everyone else. If the fire is already large and spreading, the job of fighting should be left to the professionals.

If you do not have easy access to firefighting tools and equipment or if you cannot remember where the layflat fire hose is located, it would be a wiser idea to flee the place. And if you are already panicking and you know you are not capable of doing the job with a rational mind, then it is better to get out as fast as you can.

Fighting fire can put your life in danger so it of utmost importance that you are able to make the right decision during a fire emergency on whether to fight fire or flee the burning area.
