How to Become a Firefighter

When you say the word, “firefighter,” the image that will probably come into your mind is a fully suited man, turning on a hose reel valve, and aiming a fire hose at a large burning house. After we envision that image, we are always reminded of the different kinds of perils that a firefighter faces every time he has to combat a fire.

Being a firefighter is surely one of the most dangerous jobs in this world and yet, there are still many of us who wish and aspire to become one. Some probably aspire to become heroes who save lives and rescue people. Some probably are in it for the thrill and challenge of battling fire with a fire hose. Others are probably following footsteps of the elders in the family.

If you are one of those who someday wish to wear a firefighter’s uniform and perhaps be able to save a life or two, here are some pieces of useful information on how to become a firefighter.

Is this the right career for you?

The foremost step you have to do before you become a firefighter is to decide if this is really what you want. Being a firefighter is not an ordinary job. You need to have the right reasons to become one. You need to have the right kind of determination, strength and courage to succeed in this kind of work.

Proper education and training

You cannot be a firefighter if you do not know what a branchpipe nozzle is. Moreover, you cannot join the fire brigade if you have not undergone formal education and training. In the UK, the UK firefighters belong to an organization called Fire Brigades Union (FBU). This organization strives to keep firefighters safe while trains them to give the best kind of service to the community.

Some colleges and universities now offer fire science and fire engineering courses, which can lead the path to becoming a firefighter. After that, an aspiring firefighter must receive extensive training with a fire department’s training center.

Formal education and training will equip firefighters knowledge and skills of firefighting, fire prevention, hazardous materials control, local building codes, emergency procedures, and proper usage of fire brigade equipment including but not limited to axes, chain saws, fire extinguishers, and ladders.

Application process

Aside from formal education and training, the FBU also requires an intensive series of interviews as part of the application process to ensure that only the most qualified individuals are able to join fire brigades in this country.

Apart from determining your capabilities of utilizing fire brigade equipment and fire hydrant equipment, you will also be asked to take psychological exams to see if you are mentally fit to face the dangers of fire emergencies. You also need to show your physical capacity, health and fitness because being a firefighter not only takes courage but also physical strength.

Being a firefighter puts your life at risk but the noble cause that you do for other people and for your community gives you the kind of fulfillment that you will not find anywhere else.
